If you want to lead a healthy life, oral health cannot be ignored. For, health issues in your mouth can have significant impact on the rest of your body.

According to the recent demographics by the Oral Health Association, people start to have serious dental issues once they reach their adulthood. As people get older, their teeth become more vulnerable and susceptible to the cavity.

This usually happens as aging causes a person to suffer from various complicated medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension and many psychological changes. These symptoms are most common among the individuals over the age of 50.

The elderly people regularly refer to medical prescription and take over- the- counter medications, which have few side- effects. The side- effects makes them prone to drug interactions or unfavorable medicine reactions. Oral health can also be threatened by various medical issues and it is important to tend the teeth and gums when you get older.

Ways to Avoid Oral Diseases

Periodontal disease is one of the most common oral diseases, which is caused when the bacteria forms in your mouth. Bacteria is found in plaque which builds up between the gums and teeth. As the bacteria begins to form, your gums line can become inflamed. The inflammation can cause the gums and the jaw bone to deteriorate.

Here are some ways you can prevent periodontal disease:

  • Brush your teeth regularly, at least twice a day. Move the toothbrush in back and forth motion and also brush the roof of the mouth and your tongue.
  • Fluoride toothpaste contains minerals that prevent cavities and makes your teeth more resistant to acids and bacteria, preventing tooth decay from occurring. Brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste makes your teeth strong and healthy.
  • Flossing after every meal is important. It helps to reach places in your mouth which cannot be accessed by using a toothbrush. But, be careful while flossing, as it injures your gums. Do not floss vigorously. Take your time and remove any plaque in your mouth.
  • Visit the dentist regularly, at least once every six months. Professional dental checkups is a good preventive measure for maintaining overall dental health. The professional will look for any trouble in your teeth and gums. A dental clinic is where only the best, evidence-based methods of teeth whitening are used along with other services.

Diet and Oral Hygiene

What you eat can affect your general health, including health of teeth and gums. Often, consuming too many sugary foods, non- nutritious meals and sweetened soda causes tooth decay, which can lead to more serious diseases such as oral cancer.

But no worries! Prevention of tooth decay is not a complicated process. By intaking healthy foods, you can maintain healthy teeth. Below is a list of some food items you should include in your diet:

Meat: It is packed with very important nutrients which helps to improve your body and dental health. It contains arginine which is an essential amino acid that prevents cavities in your mouth.

Green Tea: It contains Polyphenols that prevents bacteria and toxic elements in your mouth. It is also very rich in fluoride and helps attain a healthy set of teeth.

Leafy vegetables: Vegetables such as spinach and broccoli provides calcium and also contain essential vitamin and minerals. Leafy vegetables should be a part of your regular diet.

Nuts: It contains phosphorus and calcium that make the teeth strong and helps to whiten your teeth. Along with that, it also helps to prevent bacteria in your mouth.

Milk: Drinking milk regularly keeps your teeth healthy and protect the teeth against gum disease.
